Pareidolia can also be influenced by expectations and confirmation bias. When people are already searching for a particular shape or image, they are more likely to notice something that resembles it. The brain can sometimes interpret visual information before we consciously become aware of what we are seeing. Researchers have found that people are naturally inclined to detect faces, even in unclear images and random patterns. This may explain why familiar faces, celebrities, or religious figures can sometimes seem to appear in ordinary objects.
A related phenomenon known as motion pareidolia can occur when people perceive movement or patterns in something that is actually still. This may happen when someone notices apparent movement in their peripheral vision, especially in darkness or when they are tired or sleep-deprived. The brain constantly tries to fill in missing or uncertain visual information, which can occasionally create the impression that something is moving when it is not. People can also instinctively assign emotions or personalities to objects, such as seeing a happy or sad expression in a simple arrangement of shapes.
One of the most famous examples of pareidolia is the “man in the moon,” where the contrasting light and dark areas on the lunar surface appear to form a face. Another well-known example involved a woman who claimed to see the Virgin Mary on a grilled cheese sandwich, which reportedly sold for $28,000 in the 1990s. These examples demonstrate how easily the brain can identify familiar images in everyday surroundings. In one study, participants reported seeing faces in gray static about 34% of the time, highlighting just how strongly the human brain is naturally tuned to recognize patterns.
