The online parenting community is mourning the loss of Jill Smokler, the creator of Scary Mommy, who passed away at age 48 after a two-year battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. For nearly two decades, Smokler became a trusted voice for millions of parents by challenging unrealistic expectations of motherhood and encouraging honesty about its struggles and imperfections.
Smokler died on June 22, 2026, at her home in Baltimore. Her family announced the news through her Instagram account, describing her as someone who faced every challenge with humor, strength, and authenticity. To many followers, she was more than a writer—she was a relatable friend who openly discussed the exhaustion, guilt, and chaos that often accompany parenting.
What began as a personal blog grew into Scary Mommy, one of the internet’s most influential parenting platforms. Through her writing and bestselling books, including Confessions of a Scary Mommy and Motherhood Comes Naturally (and Other Vicious Lies), she helped normalize conversations about the realities of family life. She also founded Scary Mommy Nation, a nonprofit initiative that supported families in need, and later launched the podcast She’s Got Issues.
After being diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2024, Smokler openly shared her treatment journey, including surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, and experimental therapies. Her honesty inspired many facing their own challenges. She is survived by her three children, Lily, Ben, and Evan, along with her parents, brother, and countless readers worldwide. More than any award or business success, her lasting legacy is the cultural shift she inspired—reminding parents that they do not have to be perfect to be enough.
