Why You Shouldn’t Be Washing Bath Mats in the Washer

Bathroom mats may seem harmless to wash at home, but many appliance technicians advise against putting them in a standard household washing machine. Even newer front-load models can suffer significant wear when forced to clean heavy, waterlogged mats. Although the drum appears large enough, the stress created during the wash and spin cycles can lead to costly damage over time. According to experienced repair professionals, this is one of the most frequent mistakes homeowners make.

The biggest issue is the amount of water bathroom mats absorb. Once saturated, they become far heavier than most residential washers are designed to handle. During high-speed spin cycles, which can reach around 1,200 revolutions per minute, that extra weight places tremendous strain on internal components. Rubber-backed mats are especially problematic because the backing can begin to break apart, sending small pieces into the drain pump and hoses. Loose fibers can also contribute to clogs, leading to repairs that could have been avoided.

Another component at risk is the washer’s rear bearing, which supports the spinning drum under heavy loads. Repeatedly washing soaked mats can wear the bearing prematurely, often causing loud grinding, banging, or roaring noises during the spin cycle. In more severe cases, the metal spider bracket that supports the drum may crack under the pressure. These repairs can be expensive enough that replacing the machine becomes more practical, particularly if the washer is already several years old.

If you have washed bathroom mats before, it is worth checking your machine for early warning signs. The drum should spin smoothly by hand with little movement when gently rocked, and unusual noises during operation may indicate developing problems. To reduce the risk of damage, consider washing heavy mats and bulky blankets in commercial machines at a laundromat, which are built to handle larger loads. At home, regular shaking, spot cleaning, and air drying can help keep bathroom mats clean while extending the life of your washing machine.
