What’s the Reason Behind Painting Trees White?

You may have noticed that some trees have their lower trunks painted white, and many people assume it is simply decorative. In reality, this practice is mainly intended to protect the bark from sunscald, a type of damage caused by sudden temperature changes. It is especially common during winter, when freezing nights are followed by bright, sunny days that warm one side of the trunk. These rapid shifts can cause the bark to crack, making the tree more vulnerable to diseases, fungi, and insect pests.

The white coating reflects sunlight and helps keep the bark at a more stable temperature throughout the day. This reduces stress on the trunk and is particularly beneficial for young trees with thin, delicate bark. For this reason, white-painted trunks are commonly seen in orchards, gardens, and residential landscapes where newly planted trees need extra protection.

Not every painted tree has the same purpose, however. In some places, different paint colors or markings are used to identify trees that need pruning, removal, inspection, or special conservation measures. Because these color systems are not universal, it is important to follow local guidelines rather than assuming every painted tree carries the same meaning.

If you choose to paint a tree for protection, use a diluted water-based latex paint instead of oil-based products, which can interfere with the bark’s natural functions. A light-colored coating applied with a brush usually provides the best coverage and reflects the most sunlight. In many cases, a single coat is enough, although harsh weather conditions may require occasional reapplication. This simple practice can help young trees stay healthier and better withstand environmental stress during their early years.
