Swollen feet and poor circulation are common issues that can result from fluid retention, inflammation, injury, or circulatory problems. Some people use the pitting edema test, where pressing on swollen skin leaves a temporary indentation, as a sign of fluid buildup. While medical evaluation is important for persistent swelling, certain herbs may help support circulation and reduce discomfort.
Several herbs are known for their circulation-boosting and anti-inflammatory properties. Ginkgo biloba may improve blood flow by helping blood vessels dilate, while calendula can soothe inflammation and stimulate circulation. Butcher’s broom and horse chestnut are often used to strengthen blood vessels and support healthy blood flow, especially in the legs and feet.
Other helpful options include chamomile, ginger, witch hazel, rosemary, turmeric, and dandelion. Chamomile and witch hazel may reduce swelling and irritation, while ginger, rosemary, and turmeric are valued for their anti-inflammatory effects and ability to promote circulation. Dandelion acts as a natural diuretic, helping the body eliminate excess fluid that may contribute to swollen feet.
A simple dandelion foot soak can be made by steeping 1 tablespoon of dried dandelion root in 1 cup of hot water for 10–15 minutes, then straining and allowing it to cool to a comfortable temperature. Soak your feet for 15–20 minutes, then dry them gently. This may be repeated daily as needed. However, herbal remedies should not replace medical care. Consult a healthcare professional before using herbal treatments, especially if you have underlying health conditions or take medications.
