TEXAS TOAST WITH CHEESE

Texas toast may not have originated directly in Texas, but it became popular in Southern steakhouses during the mid-20th century. Known for its extra-thick slices of bread, Texas toast is designed to hold generous amounts of butter while maintaining a crispy exterior and soft interior. Adding melted cheese takes the classic side dish to another level, creating a rich and satisfying combination of flavor and texture.

To prepare it, start with four thick slices of white bread. Mix softened butter with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper until well combined. Spread the seasoned butter evenly over each slice, then place the bread on a lined baking sheet with the buttered side facing up. Finish by topping each slice with a generous amount of shredded cheese such as cheddar, Monterey Jack, or mozzarella.

Bake the toast in a preheated 400°F (200°C) oven for about 8 to 10 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and the edges become golden and crisp. For a more deeply browned finish, place the toast under the broiler for an additional minute or two, watching carefully to prevent burning. Allow the toast to cool briefly before slicing and serving.

This cheesy Texas toast pairs well with dishes such as chili, tomato soup, barbecue, or pasta, and can also be enjoyed with dipping sauces like marinara or ranch. Using real butter and thick-cut bread helps achieve the best results. Quick to prepare and packed with flavor, it is a simple way to bring restaurant-style comfort food to the table in just a few minutes.
