Snake Inside Home: Stay Calm and Act Safely

Finding a snake inside your home can be alarming, but snakes usually enter houses while looking for food, shelter, warmth, or protection from harsh weather. Small openings around doors, windows, pipes, garages, and foundations can give them an easy way inside. Homes may also attract snakes when rodents or insects are nearby, providing a convenient source of food.

If you find a snake indoors, try to remain calm and keep your distance. Do not attempt to grab, corner, or chase it, as this could make the animal defensive. Keep children and pets away from the area, and close nearby doors if you can do so safely. Since some snakes can be difficult to identify correctly, contacting a local wildlife professional may be the safest way to have the animal identified and removed.

After the snake has been removed, look around your home for possible entry points. Inspect areas near doors, windows, vents, pipes, and the foundation, and seal suitable gaps or openings. Around the outside of the house, remove piles of wood, leaves, debris, and other areas where snakes could hide. Checking for rodents and insects is also important because reducing their presence can make your property less attractive to snakes.

A snake inside the house does not automatically mean there is an immediate danger, but it is still important to treat the situation cautiously. Avoid disturbing the animal, keep people and pets away, and seek professional assistance when necessary. Sealing openings, keeping the yard clean, and controlling pest problems can help reduce the chances of another unexpected visitor finding its way inside.
