Should You Flush With the Toilet Lid Up or Down?

There’s a surprisingly interesting debate that comes up in many households: should the toilet lid be left up or closed when flushing? While some people automatically lower the lid, others never give it a second thought. The question isn’t only about keeping the bathroom looking tidy, since flushing can send tiny droplets and particles into the surrounding air. This airborne mixture is commonly known as a “toilet plume.”

When a toilet is flushed, the force and movement of the water can create an aerosol containing extremely small droplets that may travel outside the bowl. Depending on the type of toilet and the flushing conditions, some of these particles can land on nearby surfaces, including bathroom fixtures and personal belongings. For that reason, it’s a good hygiene practice to keep toothbrushes, towels, and other frequently used items at a safe distance from the toilet.

However, closing the lid doesn’t necessarily eliminate the problem entirely. Research indicates that lowering the lid can affect the way airborne particles move, but it may not stop all aerosols from escaping. Some studies have shown that particles can still become airborne even when the lid is closed, so treating the toilet lid as a complete barrier isn’t the most effective approach.

The best solution is to combine several simple hygiene habits. Whenever possible, close the toilet lid before flushing, while also storing toothbrushes and personal items away from the toilet. Regularly clean commonly touched bathroom surfaces and keep the room properly ventilated. Closing the lid is an easy habit that can help, but maintaining good overall cleanliness and airflow is equally important.
