Most people get one second chance at life. Mine came with three extra hearts. Two days before my wedding, I discovered that the man I planned to marry wanted to take my house, my savings, and abandon my children. Oliver accidentally left our phone call connected while speaking to his mother. I heard him laugh as he explained that after the wedding, he would make me sign whatever he wanted. He called my children freak kids and admitted he was tired of pretending to love them.
I ended the call without saying a word. Three years earlier, my sister Diane had died suddenly, leaving me to raise her twin daughters, Selena and Mika, alongside my son Harry. They were my entire world. Everything I owned was protected in a trust for them, something Oliver knew nothing about. That night, I refused to confront him. Instead, I made three calls. My cousin Danny secured the children’s trust, I canceled the marriage license, and then I heard from Chelsea, Oliver’s sixteen-year-old niece, who had secretly recorded another conversation and sent it to me.
The next morning, I asked the wedding planner to prepare a surprise video for the reception. Oliver arrived smiling, convinced he was about to marry me and gain control of my life. When the montage began, his own voice filled the room. Everyone heard him describe my children, my money, and his plans to leave me once he had what he wanted. His smile disappeared. His mother demanded that the recording be stopped, but nobody moved.
I took the microphone and told everyone the truth. There was no marriage license. The house and savings belonged to the children’s trust. Then I asked him to explain, in front of everyone, what he meant by calling my children freak kids. He couldn’t answer. I walked out with my three children and took them to the diner for pancakes, and watching them laugh with chocolate on their faces, I realized he had it backward. They were the prize.
