How to Properly Store Garlic: 3 Methods and Tricks to Keep it Fresh Longer

Garlic is a staple ingredient in many kitchens, and proper storage helps keep it fresh and flavorful for as long as possible. The ideal method protects the bulbs from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight while allowing plenty of air circulation. When stored correctly, whole garlic bulbs can remain in good condition for several months.

For everyday storage, place whole bulbs in a cool, dry, well-ventilated spot at room temperature. Containers such as mesh baskets, paper bags, or even empty egg cartons work well because they allow air to circulate, helping prevent mold and excess moisture from building up.

It is generally best to avoid refrigerating whole garlic bulbs, as the cool, humid environment may encourage sprouting and reduce their storage life. If you want to keep garlic for a longer period, freezing is a practical alternative. Peel the cloves, seal them in an airtight freezer-safe bag or container, and use them directly from the freezer in cooked dishes when needed.

Some people choose to store peeled garlic in oil, but this method requires extra caution. Garlic preserved in oil should always be refrigerated and used within a short time because improper storage can create conditions that allow harmful bacteria to grow. Using safe food-handling practices and selecting the storage method that suits your needs will help keep garlic fresh, flavorful, and ready for cooking.
