How to Get Rid of Gnats and Keep Them Away

Seeing one tiny gnat inside your home may not seem like a big deal, but spotting several can quickly become frustrating. These small insects are commonly drawn to damp houseplant soil, kitchen sinks, drains, trash cans, and overripe fruit. While they generally do not bite, they can reproduce rapidly, turning a few unwanted visitors into a persistent household nuisance.

The first step in getting rid of them is finding the moisture or food source that is attracting them. Let houseplant soil dry between waterings when appropriate, remove dead leaves, and make sure excess water is not collecting around your plants. In the kitchen, clean trash cans regularly, wipe away food residue, keep drains clean, and store ripe fruit properly. Sticky traps placed near affected plants can also help catch adult gnats while giving you a better idea of where the problem is concentrated.

A simple homemade trap can also help reduce the number of flying adults. Pour a small amount of apple cider vinegar into a shallow bowl and add a drop of dish soap. The vinegar attracts the insects, while the soap breaks the liquid’s surface tension, making it difficult for them to escape once they land. For another option, cover the bowl with plastic wrap and poke several small holes in the top, allowing gnats to enter while making it harder for them to get back out.

However, trapping adult gnats alone usually will not solve the problem if they continue breeding. The most effective strategy is to eliminate the conditions that allow them to multiply by controlling excess moisture, keeping surfaces clean, and regularly checking houseplants. With consistent attention and a little patience, a small gnat infestation can often be brought under control without immediately resorting to harsh chemicals.
