Here’s why you should always leave an upturned glass and a piece of paper in the sink before going on vacation

Before heading off on vacation, many people make a checklist that includes unplugging electronics, locking doors, and shutting off the water supply. One simple task that is often overlooked, however, is protecting the kitchen and bathroom drains. Leaving sinks uncovered for several days or weeks can allow unpleasant odors to develop, increase moisture, and make it easier for insects to find their way inside.

When a sink remains unused for an extended period, particularly during hot weather, the water inside the drain trap can slowly evaporate. Once that protective water barrier is reduced, sewer gases may travel back through the plumbing and create stale or musty odors indoors. At the same time, damp drains can become attractive entry points for tiny pests such as gnats, ants, and cockroaches.

Preparing your sink before leaving only takes a few minutes. Start by cleaning the basin and drain thoroughly, then pour hot white vinegar into the drain to help dissolve residue and freshen the pipes. After allowing the vinegar to sit for several hours, flush the drain with warm water. For an extra touch of freshness, rub a lemon wedge around the drain, dry the sink completely, place a paper towel over the drain opening, and cover it with an upside-down glass.

Although this simple technique cannot guarantee that odors or insects will never become a problem, it provides an additional layer of protection while your home is unoccupied. Combined with other basic vacation preparations, this inexpensive habit can help keep your home cleaner and more pleasant, making your return from the trip that much more enjoyable.
