‘He’ll Have to Go’ took over country & pop charts in 1960

In 1960, Jim Reeves released “He’ll Have to Go,” a song that became one of the biggest crossover hits of its era. With his smooth baritone voice and polished delivery, Reeves helped bring country music to a much wider audience. The ballad reached the top of the Billboard Country Chart and climbed to No. 2 on the Pop Chart, introducing countless listeners to the refined style of the Nashville Sound.

The song was written by Joe and Audrey Allison after Joe reportedly overheard a man speaking to his lover over the telephone in a bar. That moment inspired the unforgettable opening line, “Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone.” Under the production of Chet Atkins, the recording featured simple, tasteful instrumentation that kept the spotlight on Reeves’ expressive vocals.

The success of “He’ll Have to Go” transformed Jim Reeves into an international star and demonstrated that country music could appeal far beyond its traditional audience. Its heartfelt themes of love, separation, and longing resonated with listeners around the world, helping the song remain popular for decades. Its enduring influence also inspired later recordings by several well-known artists, including Elvis Presley.

Although Reeves’ life was tragically cut short in a plane crash in 1964 at the age of 40, his musical legacy has continued to grow. His induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame recognizes the lasting impact he had on the genre. Today, “He’ll Have to Go” is still regarded as one of the signature recordings of the Nashville Sound and a timeless country music classic.
