Losing a loved one can reshape every part of a person’s life, and everyone finds their own way through grief. After my mother passed away, my father poured his energy into work and family for more than ten years before deciding he was ready to date again. It was not an easy step, but he hoped he might eventually find companionship after so many years on his own.
At first, everything seemed to go well. His dates were enjoyable, conversations flowed naturally, and there were often plans to meet again. Yet the pattern never changed. Shortly after each promising evening, the women would suddenly stop replying to his messages, leaving him confused and wondering what had gone wrong.
As this happened again and again, my father’s confidence slowly disappeared. He began to believe he was destined to spend the rest of his life alone and eventually decided to stop dating altogether. Watching him lose hope was heartbreaking, especially because he had genuinely tried to open his heart again.
Determined to understand the situation, I asked my friend Rachel to have dinner with him. Afterward, she told me he was thoughtful, respectful, and wonderful company. They had a great evening together and even agreed to meet again, giving us hope that, at last, his luck might finally be changing.
