Earwax changes that may signal health issues

Earwax, also known as cerumen, plays an important role in keeping your ears healthy. It traps dust, dirt, and bacteria before they can reach the deeper parts of the ear canal, helping protect against irritation and infection. Normal earwax is commonly amber, orange, light brown, yellow, or off-white. Fresh wax is usually lighter in color, while older wax gradually darkens as it collects tiny particles. Its appearance and texture naturally vary from person to person because of age, genetics, and individual body chemistry.

Although the ears are designed to clean themselves, some people naturally produce more earwax than others. Narrow ear canals or excess wax production can lead to buildup that blocks the ear. When this happens, symptoms may include muffled hearing, a feeling of fullness, ringing in the ears, or mild discomfort. In contrast, watery, foul-smelling, green, or bloody discharge is not typical earwax and may indicate an infection or injury that should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

One of the best ways to care for your ears is to avoid putting anything inside the ear canal. Cotton swabs, fingers, and other objects often push wax deeper instead of removing it, increasing the risk of blockage or damage. Instead, gently wash only the outer ear with mild soap and water, then dry it with a clean towel. If earwax buildup becomes a recurring issue, over-the-counter earwax-softening drops may be helpful, provided the eardrum is intact and you do not have ear tubes.

Certain people are more likely to develop earwax blockages, including older adults, individuals with chronic ear infections, people with excessive ear hair, and those with unusually shaped or narrow ear canals. If you experience ongoing hearing changes, significant pain, dizziness, or unusual ear discharge, it is important to seek medical care. A healthcare provider can safely remove impacted earwax and determine whether another underlying condition is causing the symptoms.
