Late one night, a police officer pulled over a driver who had been swerving down an otherwise empty road. As the officer approached the vehicle, the strong smell of alcohol was immediately noticeable. “How much have you had to drink tonight?” the officer asked. “Just a couple,” the man replied confidently, despite clearly struggling to stand straight.
The officer began a sobriety test and instructed the driver to walk in a straight line. The man managed only a few steps before stumbling and pointing at the pavement. “This road isn’t straight!” he protested. Next came the one-leg stand, but the driver quickly began wobbling and nearly fell over. “I could do that if you gave me better conditions,” he complained.
Finally, the officer decided to give him one last challenge. “Use the words green, pink, and yellow in one sentence,” he said. The driver thought for several seconds before suddenly smiling. “My phone went green green, so I pinked it up and said yellow. Have a nice day, officer!” The officer stared at him in silence, seemingly unsure whether to laugh or simply continue with the test.
After a moment, it became clear that the driver had demonstrated exactly why he had been stopped. He may not have passed the sobriety test, but he certainly managed to pass the comedy test. The officer had plenty of reasons to remain serious, but the driver’s bizarre response made the situation unexpectedly funny. Would you have been able to keep a straight face?
