Only geniuses know the right answer!” Riddles like this have become a classic on social media, frequently appearing on platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram. Without seeing the actual image, however, there is no definite answer. Many versions are built around optical illusions or clever mathematical tricks that encourage people to count only the eggs they can immediately see rather than considering what may be hidden.
One popular version shows eggs arranged in layers inside a box or on a plate, sometimes forming a pyramid. The trick is that several eggs may be hidden underneath the visible ones. For example, if there is one egg on the top layer, four on the next, and nine on the bottom, the total is 14 eggs. Other versions use glass, mirrors, or reflections to make the number appear much larger. In those puzzles, the challenge is recognizing which eggs are real and which are simply reflections.
Some egg riddles do not even require a picture and instead depend entirely on the wording. A classic example asks, “I have 6 eggs. I broke 2, boiled 2, and ate 2. How many do I have left?” The answer is 4 because the same two eggs can be the ones that were broken, boiled, and eaten. The puzzle is designed to make you assume that each number represents a different group, when the wording actually allows the actions to involve the same eggs.

They are often intentionally confusing, using unclear images, unusual arrangements, or wording that can be interpreted in different ways. The goal is frequently to encourage comments, debates, and shares rather than genuinely measure intelligence. People may come up with answers such as 14, 16, 20, or even higher depending on how they interpret the puzzle. So before calling yourself a genius—or accusing someone else of getting it wrong—remember that the real challenge may simply be paying close attention to the details.
