A Tradition Passed Down

After my mother-in-law passed away, I started helping my father-in-law with everyday household chores, including doing the laundry. One thing immediately caught my attention—every time we washed clothes, he asked me to drop a couple of aspirin tablets into the washing machine. When I asked him why, he smiled and said, “That’s how my wife always did it.” His answer made me wonder whether this was simply an old family habit or a laundry trick that actually served a purpose.

Curious, I looked into the idea and discovered that aspirin has been used by some people for years as a household laundry hack. Although it is widely known as a pain reliever, many homemakers believed it could help brighten white fabrics and reduce the appearance of stubborn stains. The practice has been passed down through generations, with many claiming it helped keep clothes looking cleaner and fresher.

The theory behind the trick is that aspirin, or acetylsalicylic acid, may help loosen certain residues when dissolved in water. White clothing can gradually become yellow or dull because of sweat, deodorant buildup, body oils, and leftover detergent, and some people believe aspirin can help remove some of that buildup. However, there is limited scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness, and it should never be viewed as a substitute for quality laundry detergent or reliable stain-removal products.

If you decide to try unusual laundry methods like this, it is always best to read the garment’s care label first and test the treatment on a hidden section of the fabric. While some traditional household tips can be helpful, others are based mainly on personal experience rather than proven results. For my father-in-law, though, adding aspirin to the wash was more than just a cleaning habit—it was a small tradition that kept alive a daily routine he had once shared with his wife.
