A hotel room may be filled with small extras that feel like gifts, but not everything is meant to leave with you. Taking the wrong item could result in an unexpected charge after checkout. Before packing your suitcase, it is worth knowing which items are usually complimentary and which ones belong to the hotel.
Individually packaged toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, lotion, toothpaste, and shower caps are generally safe to take. Basic branded pens and notepads are also commonly provided for guests to keep. These small items are considered part of the hotel experience and usually will not cause any problems.
Larger or reusable items are a different story. Towels, robes, bedding, furniture, artwork, electronics, and appliances normally remain the hotel’s property. This includes items such as hair dryers, kettles, irons, and coffee makers. If something is missing after you leave, the hotel may charge you for it.
Some hotel items fall into a gray area, especially slippers and hangers. Disposable slippers may be complimentary, while reusable pairs may need to stay behind, and hanger policies can differ between hotels. If you really like a robe or pillow that is not meant to be taken, ask at reception — many hotels allow guests to purchase certain items to take home without an unwanted bill.
