Everyone was scratching their heads over a mysterious object that washed ashore. It was tiny, grayish-purple, and full of holes, about the size of a small adult hand with an almost wing or skeleton-like silhouette. Friends who thought it was alive even prodded it gently with a stick and nothing happened. At first, a few guesses seemed reasonable, like a shark egg case, a pelican breastbone, or part of a skate or ray.
The real answer turned out to be far more sentimental than anyone expected. The mystery item was actually a wing from a vintage Kenner Alien toy from the 90s. When compared side by side, it clearly matched the wing on Kenner’s Flying Alien Queen from its Aliens toy line, with its unusual shaped holes, ribbed structure, sharp edges, and smoky purple color.
That explains why the object looked so convincingly biological. Kenner designed the toy to look like a horrific cross between an insect, a bat, and a nightmare, so the color scheme and texture made it easy to mistake for something from the sea.
Kenner’s Aliens figures were known for their inventive designs and the Flying Alien Queen was one of the most dynamic, with huge flapping wings. Decades later, one disembodied wing washing ashore looked less like a toy and more like an unknown sea creature. Sometimes what washes up on the beach isn’t ancient, rare, or biological at all, it’s just a little piece of someone’s childhood.
