A television may stay ready for the remote, a gaming console may remain connected for updates, and a coffee machine may keep its clock running. One device may use very little, but dozens of appliances connected for hours or days can add to overall electricity consumption.

The term vampire power describes the way electronics quietly draw electricity while sitting idle. Think of it like a faucet that is barely dripping. A single drop seems insignificant, but thousands of drops over a long period eventually add up. Standby consumption varies greatly, though, and modern electronics are often much more efficient than older models.

Unplugging a few phone chargers probably won’t make a dramatic difference to your electricity bill. However, disconnecting devices that remain unused for long periods can reduce unnecessary consumption. Televisions, soundbars, gaming consoles, coffee machines, streaming equipment, and appliances with digital displays or timers are worth checking, especially if they are rarely used.

Gaming consoles can consume standby power when they remain connected to the internet or ready to start quickly. Coffee makers with clocks and programmable features may also use electricity after brewing. Chargers generally use very little power when nothing is connected, but unplugging them when unnecessary is still an easy habit. You don’t need to unplug everything in your home, but focusing on rarely used appliances and using a power strip or an energy monitor to check idle usage can be a simple part of a broader energy-saving routine.
