Before I could knock, the door suddenly opened. An elderly woman stood there with tears in her eyes. “Rosalie?” she whispered. “Frank told me you might come.” Inside, she showed me an old star-shaped pancake cutter, the same one Frank had used during my childhood, then handed me a photograph of a little girl beside him. “Her name was Miley,” she explained. “Frank’s daughter.” Miley had died in an accident when she was only five, years before Frank married my mother.

The woman then revealed something I had never known. After my mother died, Frank had almost left me. He was terrified of losing another child and believed he could not survive that kind of pain again. He came to her house that night, ready to walk away, but she convinced him to return. Despite his fear, he already loved me, but Frank never told me because he did not want me to feel guilty for knowing how close he had come to leaving.

I hurried back to the hospital, wanting to tell Frank that I finally understood, but he was already gone. Among his belongings, I found his old wallet. Behind his license were two photographs: Miley beside star-shaped pancakes and me holding my own crooked pancake. He had carried both daughters with him all those years.

That evening, I made star-shaped pancakes for my daughter using Frank’s old cutter. When she asked why Grandpa always made them that way, I told her, “Because sometimes love remembers the past while still making room for someone new.” For the first time, I understood that Frank had not stayed because he felt sorry for me. He stayed because I had become his daughter.
