Nearly three decades after Princess Diana’s death, photographs of her and King Charles still attract attention. One particular image from Balmoral in 1981 has puzzled royal watchers because Charles appears dramatically taller than Diana. In the photograph, Diana stands beside Charles, who appears to tower over her, creating the impression of a surprisingly large height difference.

The image becomes even more curious when compared with other photographs of the couple. In some pictures, Charles looks much taller, while in others, they appear much closer in height. This has led to questions about whether photography, posture, or positioning affected how their heights appeared. Sociologist Lisa Wade has even discussed how photographs of the couple could reflect traditional expectations that men should appear taller than women.

However, the explanation for the famous Balmoral photograph is surprisingly simple. In other photographs from the same setting, it becomes clear that Diana was sitting on a bench. Her seated position makes the difference between the two appear much greater than it would if both were standing.

Photography can easily change our perception of height. Camera angles, posture, perspective, footwear, and positioning can all make someone appear taller or shorter, so a single photograph is not a reliable way to determine the true height difference between two people. What first appears to be a mysterious royal height difference therefore has a straightforward explanation, and other images give a more realistic impression of how the couple compared in height.
