There is a unique sense of comfort that comes from entering a bedroom where the bed has been carefully made. Fluffy pillows, neatly arranged blankets, and fresh, smooth sheets can immediately create a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere. At 73 and living alone, I consider my bedroom a personal sanctuary where I read, enjoy my morning tea, and try to improve my sleep. Recently, while a friend was helping me organize my linen closet, she noticed that I was placing my favorite white top sheet “upside down.” I laughed and explained that I had been making my bed that way for almost fifty years, which made me realize how many traditional housekeeping habits have slowly disappeared.
But what does “upside down” really mean when it comes to a bed sheet? It isn’t about which end faces the head or foot of the bed. Instead, it refers to the sheet’s hem and tag. Most flat sheets have a smooth, decorative finished hem on one end, while the opposite end usually has a rougher seam and a manufacturer’s tag. Traditionally, the finished hem is positioned at the head of the bed, while the seam and tag are placed toward the foot. Once a blanket or duvet is added and its upper edge is folded back over the sheet, it creates a clean, attractive cuff similar to the style commonly seen in well-made hotel beds.
This simple technique can offer practical benefits as well as making the bed look more elegant. Having the smoother finished edge near your face may feel more comfortable, particularly for anyone with sensitive skin. Keeping the tag and rougher seam toward the bottom of the bed also helps prevent them from rubbing against your neck while you sleep. Folding the blanket or duvet back creates another small advantage because your face and hands remain against the freshly laundered sheet instead of the outer bedding. Most importantly, the folded cuff gives the entire bed a neat, polished appearance that makes the room feel more comfortable and inviting.
Creating a beautiful bed doesn’t require complicated techniques or expensive bedding. Simply position the top sheet with its finished hem at the head of the bed, place your blanket or duvet on top, and fold the upper portion backward to form the traditional cuff. Then smooth out the bedding, arrange your pillows, and you’re finished. Sometimes, the simplest old-fashioned housekeeping habits are worth bringing back. Small details like this can make a bedroom feel tidier, cozier, and more relaxing, turning an ordinary bed into a welcoming place to rest at the end of the day.
