The Simple Sink Trick Every Traveler Should Know Before Leaving Home

Before heading off on vacation, most people remember to lock the doors, unplug unnecessary electronics, and check that everything is secure. However, one small area is often forgotten: the drains in the kitchen and bathroom. When sinks go unused for several days or weeks, unpleasant odors can sometimes develop, while stagnant moisture may attract small insects such as drain flies. A simple trick is to cover the drain before leaving by placing a paper towel over the opening and setting an upside-down drinking glass on top.

The glass acts as a basic physical barrier, helping contain odors and making it harder for insects to emerge from the drain while you’re away. It’s a quick precaution that requires almost no effort and costs virtually nothing. While it may not completely eliminate every possible issue, it can provide an extra layer of protection during a period when your home is sitting empty.

You can also give the sink and drain a little attention before your trip. Pouring some hot white vinegar down the drain may help loosen minor buildup. Let it sit briefly before rinsing with warm water, then wipe the sink and surrounding area dry. For a fresh citrus scent, you can gently rub a lemon wedge around the drain before covering it.

This simple method isn’t a substitute for regular plumbing maintenance, but it can be a useful precaution before leaving your home unattended. Spending just a few minutes preparing your sinks may help reduce unwanted odors and other minor surprises when you return. Sometimes, a tiny bit of preparation can make the first day back from vacation much more pleasant.
