A baggage handler revealed why you should never tie ribbons to your suitcase.

A colorful ribbon tied to your suitcase may seem like an easy way to recognize your bag at the baggage carousel, but it can sometimes create unexpected problems. Airports rely on automated scanners, conveyor belts, and sorting systems to process huge numbers of suitcases efficiently. Loose ribbons, scarves, straps, or other decorations can potentially interfere with this process, especially if they become caught in moving equipment.

Another concern is that a ribbon could cover or partially block your baggage tag or barcode. These labels are essential for automated sorting because they help direct your suitcase to the correct destination. If a scanner cannot read the information properly, the bag may need to be removed from the automated system and handled manually, which could contribute to delays. Loose or oversized accessories may also become tangled in conveyor machinery.

If you want your suitcase to stand out, there are safer and more practical alternatives. Choosing luggage with a distinctive color or pattern can make it easier to identify, while a secure luggage strap, bright luggage tag, or properly fitted cover can add visibility without leaving loose material hanging from the bag. Before traveling, remove old baggage stickers, make sure your current tag is clearly visible, and consider placing your contact information both inside and outside the suitcase.

Of course, tying a ribbon to your luggage is not generally prohibited, and many travelers do it without experiencing any problems. Still, if your goal is to reduce the possibility of delays or handling issues, keeping your suitcase simple and making sure all important labels remain fully visible is a sensible approach. A small change in how you identify your luggage can make it easier to spot while keeping it more compatible with airport baggage systems.
