**8 things you should never put in the dishwasher** (and why)

A dishwasher is one of the most convenient kitchen appliances, but it is not the right choice for every item. High water temperatures, harsh detergents, and strong spray pressure can damage certain cookware, utensils, and drinkware over time. Before placing anything inside, it is always a good idea to read the manufacturer’s care instructions. If an item is marked “hand wash only,” following that recommendation will help preserve its quality and extend its lifespan.

Kitchen knives and wooden utensils are among the items that should be washed by hand. Sharp blades can become dull after repeated contact with other utensils during the wash cycle, while wooden spoons, handles, and cutting boards can absorb moisture, leading to cracks, warping, or discoloration. Washing these items with warm, soapy water, drying them immediately, and occasionally treating wooden surfaces with food-grade mineral oil helps keep them in excellent condition.

Fragile crystal glasses, fine china, cast iron cookware, and nonstick pans also require extra care. Crystal and porcelain can become chipped, cloudy, or damaged inside the dishwasher, and decorative finishes may gradually fade. Cast iron loses its protective seasoning when exposed to dishwasher detergent, increasing the risk of rust. Likewise, frequent dishwasher use can slowly wear away the nonstick coating on pans, so washing them gently with a soft sponge after they have cooled is the safest approach.

It is also wise to keep jars with adhesive labels and many insulated travel mugs or thermoses out of the dishwasher. Heat and water can loosen paper labels, leaving behind sticky residue that may clog the appliance’s filter. For insulated drinkware, high temperatures can damage the vacuum seal, reducing its ability to maintain hot or cold temperatures. Taking a few extra moments to hand wash these items can help protect your kitchen tools while also keeping your dishwasher running efficiently.
