Cloudy or yellowed headlights can significantly reduce visibility when driving at night, but restoring them is often easier and less expensive than many people expect. Rather than replacing the entire headlight assembly, which can be costly, you can polish plastic lenses yourself in about 45 minutes using a few basic supplies. This method is effective for surface oxidation and minor scratches, though it will not fix damage inside the headlight or restore peeling reflective coatings.
Begin by cleaning the headlight thoroughly with warm, soapy water, then rinse and dry it completely. Apply masking tape around the edges of the headlight to protect the surrounding paint while you work. Next, soak wet-and-dry sandpaper in water before starting the sanding process. Use 1,500-grit sandpaper if the lens has only light discoloration, or begin with 1,000-grit if there are small scratches or heavier oxidation.
Sand the lens in one direction using steady, even pressure. After rinsing the surface, switch to a finer grit of sandpaper and sand in the opposite direction. Continue this process, gradually working your way up to 2,500-grit paper. Once the sanding is complete, rinse the lens again and dry it thoroughly. Apply a plastic polishing compound to a soft flannel cloth and buff the surface with firm circular motions until the lens becomes smooth and transparent. Allow the polish to dry before wiping away any remaining residue with a clean section of the cloth. If the lens still appears hazy, repeat the polishing step until the desired clarity is achieved.
To maintain clear headlights, clean them regularly with a mild detergent and a soft sponge or brush, then rinse and dry them well. While some people use toothpaste to remove light surface haze, products specifically designed for polishing clear plastic usually provide better and longer-lasting results. Avoid using harsh cleaners or abrasive products that are not intended for plastic lenses, as they can cause additional damage. With a small investment of time, you can improve nighttime visibility, refresh your vehicle’s appearance, and avoid the expense of replacing the headlights.
