She married an African man at 21 and left us… but every year she sends us the same message”

Theresa, 63, raised her only daughter, Mary Lou, on her own, working tirelessly to provide her with every opportunity for a better future. Mary Lou grew up to be kind, intelligent, and ambitious, making her mother proud at every stage of her life. When she turned 21, she fell in love with Kang Jun, a man nearly twenty years older than she was. Although Theresa worried about the age gap and the great distance that marriage would create, Mary Lou was convinced she had found the person she wanted to spend her life with.

The couple quietly married, and just one month later, Mary Lou moved to South Korea to begin her new chapter. At the airport, she and Theresa shared a tearful goodbye, fully aware that their lives were about to change forever. From that day forward, Mary Lou never returned home. As the years passed, the only consistent connection between them became an annual bank transfer accompanied by the same short message: “Mom, take care of yourself. I’m doing well.”

Those few words offered Theresa little comfort. To her, “I’m doing well” sounded distant and repetitive, leaving far more questions than reassurance. During the twelve years apart, they spoke through a video call only once. Mary Lou appeared healthy, but her smile seemed strained, and she looked distracted, as though something was weighing heavily on her. Whenever Theresa gently asked why she never came back to visit, Mary Lou always gave the same explanation—she was simply too busy.

Although the money her daughter sent allowed Theresa to live comfortably, it could never replace the joy of having her by her side. Every Christmas, she cooked Mary Lou’s favorite meal and set an extra place at the table, hoping that one day it would finally be filled. After waiting for twelve long years, Theresa realized she could no longer live with unanswered questions. Without telling her daughter, and despite never having traveled abroad before, she booked a ticket to South Korea, determined to find out for herself what “I’m doing well” truly meant.
