This TV Star Was Called ‘Dumb’ by Parents & Could Barely Read until Age 31 When He Learned of His Disorder by Chance

Henry Winkler’s path to becoming one of television’s most admired actors was shaped by challenges long before he found fame. Born in Manhattan to parents who had fled Nazi Germany, he grew up in a household where affection and encouragement were scarce. Looking back, he has said that he found it difficult to understand why other children enjoyed spending time with their families because his own childhood lacked that sense of closeness.

During his school years, Winkler struggled with severe reading difficulties caused by undiagnosed dyslexia. Rather than receiving understanding or support, he was frequently criticized and labeled as lazy or lacking intelligence. Those experiences damaged his confidence, yet he refused to give up. His determination was evident when he applied to 28 colleges and earned acceptance to two, proving that persistence could overcome many obstacles.

The turning point came when Winkler was 31 years old and his stepson was being evaluated for dyslexia. As he learned more about the condition, he recognized that it explained many of the academic struggles he had faced since childhood. With that realization, he developed practical ways to manage his learning challenges, relying on memorization, preparation, and humor to navigate auditions and perform successfully despite his reading difficulties.

Although his acting career slowed after Happy Days ended, Winkler refused to let the setback define him. He successfully reinvented himself as a producer, contributing to the creation of the original MacGyver, and later returned to acting with acclaimed roles in productions such as Arrested Development. Alongside his professional achievements, he built a strong family life with his wife, Stacey Weitzman, and his journey continues to inspire others by showing that early hardships do not have to limit future success.
