What Is This Bug? (And What to Do When You See One)

Discovering an unfamiliar bug inside your home can be surprising, but identifying it is often simpler than you might think. Instead of panicking, take a careful look at its size, color, body shape, number of legs, and whether it has wings. Also pay attention to where you found it, as these details can provide valuable clues about the insect’s identity.

If it’s safe to do so, take a clear photo from both above and the side using good lighting. Sharp, close-up images make identification much more accurate. It also helps to note the location where you found the bug, such as the kitchen, bathroom, near a window, on a wall, or outside, since many insects prefer specific environments.

Once you know what the insect is, it becomes much easier to decide whether any action is necessary. Many bugs that occasionally wander indoors, including ladybugs and certain beetles, are harmless and may simply be looking for shelter. Others, such as ants, cockroaches, or bed bugs, can become household pests and may require treatment. It’s best to avoid using pesticides until you’ve correctly identified the insect, as different pests often require different control methods.

To reduce the chances of insects entering your home, keep food in sealed containers, clean up crumbs and spills promptly, empty trash regularly, seal gaps around doors and windows, and repair damaged screens. These simple steps help eliminate food sources, moisture, and entry points that attract bugs. If you’re unsure about an insect you’ve found, upload a clear photo, and I’ll help identify it and explain whether it’s harmless or if further action is recommended.
