Columbo actor Peter Falk “couldn’t remember” his award-winning role near the end of his life

With his rumpled raincoat, ever-present cigar, and trademark squint, Peter Falk brought Detective Columbo to life as one of television’s most unforgettable crime solvers. His character appeared absent-minded and unassuming, yet consistently outwitted murderers who believed they had committed the perfect crime. Columbo’s famous phrase, “just one more thing,” became a signature moment that revealed the small clue leading to the truth. Falk’s performance earned him four Emmy Awards and worldwide recognition.

Long before achieving fame, Falk overcame significant personal challenges. At the age of three, he lost his right eye to retinoblastoma and wore a prosthetic eye throughout his life, giving him the distinctive squint audiences came to recognize. Although some believed his condition would prevent him from succeeding as an actor, he proved them wrong by earning two Academy Award nominations before becoming one of television’s highest-paid stars.

Away from the spotlight, Falk’s personal life was marked by both happiness and hardship. He was married to his college sweetheart, Alyce Mayo, for 16 years, and they adopted two daughters, Catherine and Jackie. After their divorce, he married actress Shera Danese. In later years, Falk’s relationship with Catherine became the subject of public disagreements, with conflicting claims over whether she was allowed to spend time with him during his declining health.

Peter Falk died peacefully at his Beverly Hills home in June 2011 at the age of 83 after living with Alzheimer’s disease, while pneumonia was reported as the immediate cause of his death. According to those close to him, the illness had progressed so severely that he no longer remembered portraying Columbo. Even so, his remarkable career and unforgettable performance ensured his place as one of television’s greatest actors, leaving behind a detective whose wit and charm continue to captivate audiences around the world.
