Grandma’s Genius Dryer Vent Cleaning Trick

A clogged dryer vent might not seem like a serious problem, but it can affect both your dryer’s performance and your home’s safety. As lint accumulates inside the vent, airflow becomes restricted, forcing the appliance to work harder and making clothes take longer to dry. This increases energy use and puts additional wear on the dryer. Even more importantly, built-up lint is highly flammable and is one of the leading causes of dryer-related house fires.

The good news is that routine dryer vent cleaning is a straightforward task that most homeowners can handle with a few basic tools. A vacuum with a hose attachment and a flexible vent brush are usually all that’s needed. Begin by unplugging the dryer, carefully pulling it away from the wall, and disconnecting the vent hose. Remove loose lint with the vacuum, then use the brush to loosen debris farther inside the vent before vacuuming again.

If your dryer vents to the outside, inspect the exterior vent cover as well. Clear away any lint, dirt, or other blockages that could restrict airflow. After cleaning, reconnect the vent hose, return the dryer to its original position, and run a short drying cycle. If you notice strong airflow from the outside vent and your clothes begin drying more quickly, the cleaning was likely successful. However, if airflow is still weak or the vent is especially long or difficult to reach, hiring a professional may be the safest solution.

Cleaning your dryer vent at least once a year, or more often if you use the dryer regularly, can improve drying efficiency, lower energy bills, reduce strain on the appliance, and greatly decrease the risk of a lint-related fire. Spending a little time on this simple maintenance task can help your dryer last longer while keeping your home safer.
