Here’s why you should always leave an upturned glass and a piece of paper in the sink before going on vacation

Before heading off on vacation, most people remember to lock the doors, unplug electronics, and shut off the water supply, but the kitchen and bathroom sinks are easy to forget. If a home is left empty for an extended period, drains may develop unpleasant odors, and damp areas can sometimes attract insects such as drain flies or cockroaches. A little preparation before leaving can help keep your home cleaner and fresher while you’re away.

A simple step is to thoroughly clean the sink and flush the drain with hot vinegar to help loosen residue. After letting it sit for a short time, rinse the drain with warm water and dry the sink completely. Some homeowners also place a paper towel over the drain and cover it with an upside-down glass, believing it may help reduce odors and discourage insects from entering.

The effectiveness of this extra barrier can vary depending on the plumbing system and the type of drain. In most homes, sewer gases are naturally blocked by the water held in the drain’s P-trap. During a typical vacation, that water usually remains in place, preventing odors from entering the home. However, if a property will be vacant for an extended period or has plumbing problems, the trap can eventually dry out.

Before leaving, it’s also a good idea to check that all drains are working properly and add a little water to any drains that are rarely used. These simple precautions can help reduce the risk of unpleasant smells or unwanted pests, making it more likely that you’ll return to a fresh, clean home after your trip.
